Smashed Avocado has got to be a Melbourne icon. Go to any Melbourne cafe and you’ll be sure to find it on the menu. You can re-create smashed avocado at home thats up there with all the Melbourne cafes. Without the price tag.

One of my favourite things to do on the weekend like many Melbornians is to go out for brunch. It’s fair to say that I have tried many, many different smashed avocado brunches in my time.

I’m the annoying wife that makes my husband drive 30 minutes to a cafe we have never tried and then order smashed avo! I just can’t help myself It’s like my eyes are drawn to the word avocado on any menu.

My top 5 Melbourne Brunch spots for smashed avocado

For the times when you want to head out for a smashing brunch here is a list of my favourites. (Numbers 1 and 5 are when I’m with the family, 2-4 is when hubby and I are lucky enough to get some us time)

  1. Jock and Mack: These guys are my local fav for my Sunday brunch fix and their “Let’s Smash it” is a must try! Were talking smashed avocado on seeded multigrain. Topped with cherry tomatoes, danish feta, super seeds, rocket, poached eggs and garnished with beetroot powder.
  2. No. 19 Society: I love this cafe because the interior is stunning and you just want to sit in here all day. Their avocado toast has some bold flavours using miso hummus, golden beets, chilli and lime.
  3. The kettle black: Oozing with sophistication is the sleek and polished South Melbourne Cafe. Their take is avocado cream with goats feta and a citrus dressing. It’s so good!
  4. Higher Ground: If you have not yet visited this cafe it is a must. The architecture of this building alone is worth the visit. You are likely to find many tourists and photographers hanging out here. Their avocado is served on a pretzel bagel with whipped goats curd, crispy shallots and green salt.
  5. Leroys: Another one of my favs, a go to with the kids because there is a great playground right next door. They serve up theirs with Bulgarian feta, rocket and super seeds.

Whilst the brunching scene is totally up my ally, a lazy Sunday at home is just as good. And if your like me and have kids, a lot easier too!

Thats when fluffy pancakes, muesli and yoghurt and smashed avocado comes into play!

It’s one of those dishes that is so simple to make at home and won’t cost you $20 a serve.

Smashed Avocado

There are so many reasons why I love this recipe.

I love that you can enjoy it for breakfast, brunch and lunch. I’m pretty sure Iv’e even had it for dinner before.

It’s totally satisfying, unlike eating cereal, whenever the kids have avocado for breakfast it actually keeps them fuller for longer. Which stops them asking for a snack 10 minutes later. I feel the same too.

There is something so luscious about avocado. The taste, the colour and the texture. It’s so visually appealing too.

It’s one of those staple items in so many peoples lives that we just never grow bored or tired of.

Health benefits of Avocado

Not only do avocados have that decadent creamy taste but they are also incredibly nutritious too!

Eating avocados are good for your overall health as they contain good fats and oils. According to Healthline.com avocados contain 20 different vitamins and minerals including vitamin K, folate and B vitamins. Avocados are also high in fibre and are carb friendly too.

I remember the days when I first introduced solids to my babies, avocados were my best friend! All I needed for lunch was an avocado (halved) and a spoon and I was set to go about my day. A ripe avocado is the perfect baby food! Half was for my baby and the other half was for me!

Did you know that avocados contain more potassium than bananas!

How to tell when an avocado is ripe

Avocados generally become darker as they ripen so the general rule is the darker the avocado the riper it is. If when gently pressing the avocado it feels soft then you know it’s ready.

Placing avocados in the fridge slows down the ripening process so if your avocados are hard Its best to leave them out of the fridge. Once an avocado is ripe you can keep it in the fridge for around a week.
