Why I love orange and poppyseed cake
My love for this cake dates back to 2012 when I was pregnant with my first child, my daughter Olive. Oranges were my obsession. I had tried a few different recipes but they were just meh.
I wanted to be blown away with the zing and the zest of the orange. After-all isn’t that what orange and poppyseed cake was all bout? so I created my own recipe! Problem solved!
Over the years Its been a recipe that I come back to time and time again because Its so easy to whip up and it tastes really good! Lets face it, sometimes you just don’t have the time to bake a 10 step cake which requires 3 different bowls, the kitchen aid and then a sink full of dishes!
This recipe is as simple as placing all the ingredients in the one bowl, giving it a good mix and pouring into a baking tin.
Even the most amateur baker can perfect this one and Im going to show you how!
What you will need
Oranges! This not only provides the wonderful flavour but it also adds zest and freshness! Some recipes use the entire orange including the peel which can result in a bitter cake. This recipe uses the zest and juice.
My top tip for zesting oranges is to use a superfine zester such as a Microplane which you can purchase here on Amazon. It will give you superfine zest and ensure there are no big chunks.
Unsalted butter; why use unsalted you ask? We don’t need salt in the recipe so why add it in and unsalted butter is fresher!
Caster Sugar; sing a superfine sugar allows it to dissolve faster in the cake batter. Resulting in less mixing for you!
Self raising Flour; you will find that even though self raising flour is used in this recipe the cake itself does not rise that much so don’t be alarmed when you take it out of the oven.
Eggs, lightly beating the eggs separately first before adding them to the mixture will again make it easier but you don’t have to.
Full cream milk, to give the cake the full flavour I recommend only using full cream milk.
Poppyseed’s; this is the best part of the cake because it gives the cake a wonderful texture and the poppyseed’s will literally pop in your mouth. the kids will love these too!

How to serve orange and poppyseed cake
After cooking, allow the cake to cool in the tin and then turn onto a wire rack to cool completely. While the cake is still warm but not hot I love to dust it with icing sugar using a sifter. If the cake is too hot the sugar will quickly melt into the cake. The icing sugar gives it a beautiful sweetness that really compliments the zest of the oranges.
Now all thats left to do is turn on the kettle and make a pot of tea to go with the cake. I was lucky enough to save myself a piece today after Joe and the kids went for second helpings.
Now that the kids are in bed and I’ve finished writing this post its time for a tea and some Netflix binging!!
