Homemade Flatbread
These past few months our Instagram feeds have been full of home made bread recipes. Given that yeast has been literally flying off the shelves these are a great alternative. No yeast required!
You are also going to love how quick and easy this recipe is. Only 4 simple steps to follow.
There is nothing better than sinking your teeth into warm and cosy homemade flatbread filled with delicious fillings. Crispy falafels with hommus and tabouli would have to be one of my favourites!
What is the difference between flatbread and pita bread
The main difference between flatbread and pita bread is that flatbread is exactly as its called flat. Most pita bread recipes call for a rising agent such as yeast making it rise that little bit more than flat bread.
Some pita bread recipes require a resting time of 4-8 hours or overnight. Thats great if you have the time but flatbread is a much quicker and easier option.
Flatbread and pita bread are pretty much interchangeable and can both be used as a wrap, as a side or for dipping and scooping.
What do you eat flatbread with
If you are like me then you will eat these soft and fluffy flat breads with anything and everything!
- Wrapped around crispy falafels and stuffed with hummus and tabouli
- They make a great pizza base or garlic bread
- To wrap souvlaki or gyros loaded with creamy tzatziki
- My kids are obsessed with wraps and love these with avocado, cheese and tomato.
- Served warm with dips such as hommus, tzatziki and baba ghanoush
- Perfect as a side for your green chicken curry or fragrant yellow curry
- Served warm with your grazing platters
What you are going to need to make homemade flatbread
- Self raising flour (if you don’t have self raising flour just use plain flour and add a teaspoon of baking powder)
- Natural yoghurt
- Olive oil
How easy is that right? Three simple ingredients that you probably have at home already. It’s such a simple and easy recipe to have.
How to make flatbread
All you need are three ingredients and no yeast is required. That means no resting time!
Start by mixing together the flour, yoghurt and olive oil in a large bowl. I also add a teaspoon of salt but thats optional. Mix until you have a smooth dough.
Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface and divide into 4 portions. Roll out each piece of dough into rounds. Dust the rolling pin and the dough with extra flour to prevent from sticking.
Place a medium size frying pan on medium heat and cook the flatbreads in a dry pan for 1-2 minutes per side or until golden.
If you find the flatbreads are coming out too crispy and hard to roll then try brushing the dough with olive oil prior to cooking. This will give you a softer outside.
In less than the time it takes you to drive to the supermarket and back to buy the prepackaged ones you are going to have beautiful soft and warm homemade flatbreads.
It’s a wrap! I hope you will love the recipe as much as I do.

Wow I didnt know you only really needed self raising flour and yoghurt to make a flatbread. I’ve been doing a lot of baking and happen to have a lot of yogurt I need to use up. Now I know how I can put it to good use 😉
