Margarita Cocktail
When you think of classic cocktails a Margarita usually comes to mind. Refreshing lime paired with Tequila and the saltiness of the rim is a genius combination. I am going to show you just how easy it is to shake up your own Margarita cocktail at home. So why not give it a try for your next get together or pair it up with Taco Tuesday.
For those of you who are subscribed to my email list you would have seen that I recently took a trip to Byron Bay with Joe for our belated 10 year Anniversary. We were definitely spoilt for choice over in Byron when it came to food, drinks and coffee!
I felt the general theme going on was laid back Mexican. The cocktails were heavily based around tequila and of course Margarita’s were found on most menus. Being the control freak that I am, I had already done my research on our resort and noted that the frozen coconut Margarita’s were a must!
Yep they were absolutely right!!

Everyone seems to have a story about that time when tequila was involved! To be honest I was never a mad tequila fan but in a Margarita Im jumping on that ban wagon!
It’s fair to say I tried my fare share of Margaritas on our holiday and I’ll admit that since I’ve been back I have been a little bit obsessed with learning about the different types of tequila and how to shake up the perfect cocktail. Now I want to share what I have learned with you!
Apart from the classic, coconut Margaritas are also really good! The difference being, coconut cream is added as well as some toasted coconut flakes or instead of coconut cream you can use the coconut infused Tequila. We visited a place in Kingscliff called La Barrita and they did amazing coconut Margaritas.
If your after an amazing Byron Bay experience and you just want total relaxation with the convenience of never having to leave your resort then Elements of Byron is a must!!
Margherita Cocktail
A margarita cocktail is one part tequila, one part lime and one part orange liqueur such as cointreau. You can adjust the quantities to suit your taste but This recipe is going to be a great base to get you started.
There are three main ways to serve a Margarita cocktail;
Straight up: Just shake it and pour it straight from the shaker;
On the rocks: poured over ice
Frozen: basically a boozy slushy
A classic Margarita is not complete without a salt rim! This is my favourite part of the cocktail as it just adds so much flavour and It’s such a wonderful accompaniment to the zesty lime flavour of the Margarita.
Which Tequila is best for margarita cocktails
OK so your at your local bottle shop and I don’t blame you if your a little overwhelmed by the choice of Tequila. There are two types of Tequila; Gold, being the darker, aged version and Silver/blanco which is clear.
Silver/blanco Tequila tends to work best as it has a more mellow flavour and wont overpower the cocktail. It will leave you with that nice smooth taste.
Here are some recommended brands of Tequila to try for making Margaritas, click on the links to take you straight to the product:
For a sweet and refreshing flavour combo you can also use a coconut infused tequila such as 1800 coconut Tequila
How to rim your cocktail glasses
1/ Use lime or lemon juice to wet the rim of the cocktail glass
2/ Dip the rim of the glass in a tray filled with salt, I love using Black Sea salt flakes
3/ Shake off any excess and allow to dry for a minute or two before pouring the cocktail
The perfect pair for a margarita cocktail
Lets face it, Margaritas can go well with just about anything but here are my favourite dishes to pair the classic glass of fun with. Chin Chin!!
Tacos: Take taco Tuesday to another level by pairing your tacos with a cocktail or two! Slow cooker shredded beef tacos are so so good!
Mexican Rice perfect on It’s own as a main meal or as a side dish the Margaritas will go down smoothly either way!
Enchiladas are another favourite of mine and a must try are the MFM roasted veggie enchiladas a great vegetarian dish that’s sure to please even the meat lovers.
Tips for the perfect Margarita cocktail
Always start by chilling your glasses; you can do this by leaving them in the freezer for 10-15 minutes before serving or alternatively fill to the brim with ice and leave for a few minutes then discard the ice.
Don’t skimp on quality; there are many brands of tequila out there and its imperative that you use a high quality brand such as Patron Silver tequila. It will make a big difference to the end result.
Have everything you need out ready to go on the bench before you start. Being organised makes the process so much easier.
Fresh is best when it comes to the lime! Please do not use the bottled stuff, it may be tempting but if you want the Best ever Margarita cocktail then you need to go with fresh limes.
